Legal Gambling in New York

Many might think that New York would be one of the most progressive states in the US when it comes to online gambling. That perception would be incorrect. There are many gambling opportunities that exist in New York. These include racetracks, tribal casinos, and sportsbooks. All of them are live venues.

The state continues to debate the passage of online gambling legislation. There is a current initiative to have Governor Andrew Cuomo sign off on approval for online sports betting and other types of online gambling by the end of 2020, but Cuomo has indicated that this is not a priority.

There are several retail sports betting options available in the state. These sportsbooks could be allowed to move their operations online through betting apps when the state supports online gambling legislation.

In the meantime New York could be losing much needed gambling revenue to neighboring New Jersey and Pennsylvania, two markets that have made all forms of online gambling legal through aggressive legislation. This has left many New Yorkers wondering when their own state will follow suit.
